Telegram-Specific Risks
Telegram is known for secret chats with end-to-end encryption and a two-step password. However, malicious bots can steal data, scam groups promise fake investments and fake support channels deploy phishing attacks. Always check active sessions and be cautious with bot links.

The 5 Most Common Telegram Scams
Learn about the methods most used by criminals on the platform:
How It Works:
Bots impersonating official services (banks, postal services, Telegram support). They ask you to click links or provide data. Some promise to "verify your account" or "win prizes." Interacting can lead to data theft or malware installation.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Official Telegram never sends messages via bot asking for passwords or codes
- Check if the bot is verified (verification icon)
- Never click links from unknown bots
- Banks and companies don't use Telegram for official communications
"Hello! We're Telegram support. Your account will be blocked in 24 hours. To verify your identity, click here and provide the code we sent via SMS."
How It Works:
Groups promising "guaranteed profits" with crypto, day trading or investments. They show fake profit screenshots. They ask you to deposit on fake platforms. When you try to withdraw, they invent fees or disappear.
Warning Signs:
- "Guaranteed profit" or "no risk" promises
- Deposits on unknown platforms
- Pressure to invest "now"
- Many "testimonials" that seem fake
How It Works:
Contacts or groups offer to "invest" your money and return it with high interest in a short time. The first "returns" come from new victims' money (Ponzi scheme). When there are no more new entries, the scammer disappears.
How to Protect Yourself:
- Returns above 2% per month are suspicious
- Legitimate investments go through regulated brokerages
- Never invest based on recommendations from strangers on Telegram
How It Works:
Links in messages or channels that lead to fake Telegram, bank or other service pages. When you enter your login and password, the data goes to the scammers. They can come from hacked contacts or channels you follow.
Remember:
- Always check the URL before entering credentials
- The official Telegram site is telegram.org
- Be suspicious of shortened links in messages
- Enable the two-step password as an extra layer
How It Works:
Channels or contacts impersonating official Telegram support. They offer "help" to recover accounts, verify identity or unlock features. They ask for login codes, passwords or remote access.
Protection:
- Telegram support is only at telegram.org or in the app
- There are never "official" channels that reach out via DM
- Never share codes received via SMS
Secret Chats and Active Sessions
Telegram security features you should know about:
Secret Chats — End-to-End Encryption
RecommendedSecret chats use end-to-end encryption. Only you and the recipient can read them. Messages are not stored on Telegram's servers and can be set to self-destruct. Use them for sensitive conversations.
Two-Step Password
EssentialIn addition to the SMS code, you set a password. Without it, nobody can access your account even with the verification code. This is the most important protection against account takeover.

Active Sessions
MonitorShows all devices where your account is logged in (phone, desktop, tablet). If you see something you don't recognize, terminate the session immediately — someone may have access to your account.

Telegram Protection Checklist
Follow this guide to secure your account:
Enable Two-Step Password
Set an additional password that will be required when logging in on new devices. This prevents anyone with your SMS code from accessing your account.
Path: Settings → Privacy and Security → Two-step verification → Set additional password
Use Secret Chats for Sensitive Matters
For conversations that shouldn't be stored or seen by third parties, always use secret chats. They are not stored on servers and can have self-destruct timers.
Check Active Sessions Regularly
Review the list of connected devices. If there's one you don't recognize, terminate the session immediately and change your two-step password.
Path: Settings → Privacy and Security → Active sessions
Be Careful with Bots
Don't start conversations with unknown bots. Don't click links sent by bots. Official bots from reputable companies are verified (verification icon next to the name).
Restrict Who Can Find You
In privacy settings, limit who can see your phone number and who can add you to groups. This reduces contact from scammers and spammers.

Account Hacked? Recover Now!
If you've lost access to your Telegram account:
Try to Recover with the SMS Code
Reinstall the app or use another device. When you log in with your number, Telegram will send a code via SMS. If you still have access to the phone with your number, use that code.
Use the Recovery Email
If you configured an email when enabling the two-step password, Telegram can send a recovery link to that email. Access it and follow the instructions.
Contact Support
If you can't recover on your own, reach out to recovery@telegram.org. Explain the situation and provide the phone number of the account. The process may take a few days.
Subject: Compromised account - [your number]
Warn Your Contacts
Via WhatsApp or other means, let people know your Telegram account was hacked. The scammer may be committing fraud in your name (asking for money, sending malicious links, etc.).
File a Police Report
If there was financial loss or sensitive data was leaked, file a police report.
